About the Course

This course lecture will deliver the two presentations:


  • Effects of Carbon Content on Steel 1: Thermal Equilibrium Diagrams Normalising and Annealing in the morning

  • Effects of Carbon Content on Steel 2: Rapid Cooling and Tempering in the afternoon


Plus, you will examine actual micro-sections on samples by using a microscope


  • to review how longitudinal and transverse micro-sections changes in the morphology of the grain shape, size and micro-structures

  • to evaluate the effects of de-carbonisation at the surface

  • to study unetched and etched micro-sections which will assist in identifying non-metallic inclusions and other importance micro-structure features, which are lost in etching

  • to review the changes in the carbon content effecting structure and properties before, during and after in the heat treatment process

  • to study the micro-structural features of the material under magnification relating to the changes of mechanical properties and hardness

  • to examine how the effect of heating and cooling changes the micro-structure between the surface and the centre of the metal due to mass effect and ruling section

  • to identify with and what is micro-segregation effects on the micro-structure on the mechanical and hardness properties


During the lecture, there will be opportunities for questions and debates.
