Process of Solidification and its Relationship to Phase Diagrams

Course Content

This 2-hour web-training course will be focussing on the solidification of metals, distinguishing the rate of cooling in metals and alloys and identifying what phase diagrams are and their importance in Metallography Investigations and how they are useful to metallurgists.

We will examine what the relationship is between solidification, phase diagrams and metallography and how this can help to troubleshoot quality problems.

Key Learning Objectives
  • Examine why phase diagrams are useful

  • Determine the stages of solidification

  • Evaluate the formation changes of crystals

  • Differentiate the heating and cooling effects of metals and alloys

  • Analyse the grain structures of metals and alloys
